Main articles: Cornish Defence Force

The Republic of Cornwall maintains a policy of neutrality where its troops are by law only allowed to operate on Cornish territory and on the territories of nations in the Celtic Nations Alliance. Accordingly, its military role is limited to national self-defence and participation in United Nations peacekeeping and Celtic Nations Peacekeepers operations.

The Cornish Defence Forces (Lu Difenn Kernow) are made up of the Army, Naval Service and the Air Corps along with the Reserve Defence Force. It is based on the Irish Defence Force layout and organisation. Being a relatively small volunteer-based service with the majority of forces being in reserves most of the Cornish forces partake in civilian based operations like patrol of Cornish territorial waters, search and rescue and UN peacekeeping operations.

The Cornish Air Corps is the air component of the Defence Forces and operates 3 fixed wing aircraft and 5 helicopters of which none feature weaponry. The Naval Service is Cornwall's navy and operates 3 patrol ships of which all three are the British Peacock-class corvette, 2 being bought from Ireland, along with 1 training vessel and 5 smaller patrol ships for coastal protection. The military includes the Reserve Defence Forces of which contain the army reserve and naval reserve for part-time reservists.

The Cornish Defence Force also includes the Special Ranger Detachment which operates as its special forces unit. The SRD trains and operates closely with the Army Ranger Wing of Ireland and other international special operations units. Its main focus is counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency along with special reconnaissance.

The President is the formal Supreme Commander of the Defence Forces but in practise these Forces answer to the Government via the Minister for Defence.
